Collier Amsterdam Ametrine

Inspiration from architecture

Many of my designs have their origins in architecture. Often my gaze goes to the Amsterdam School, but sometimes I make forays into other modernist movements. These forms and styles offer an inexhaustible source of inspiration that translates beautifully into jewelry.

An art deco porch door as a starting point

This yellow gold pendant necklace was inspired by an art deco porch door on the Overtoom in Amsterdam. The building this door is part of was designed by architect Piet Marnette in 1923. Originally it was the home of the traffic police; today it has an entirely different purpose. Nevertheless, the building remains one of the most characteristic buildings in Amsterdam.

Pete Marnette and his style

Piet Marnette worked at Amsterdam's municipal works department and designed several buildings, including the administration building of the Gemeentetram and the headquarters of the municipal telephone service. Yet this building stands out for its special dynamism and refined details. Whereas his other designs sometimes appear more severe, this building has a playful elegance and panache. This may be due to the fact that he did not work here with sculptor Hildo Krop, whose influence often created a heavier look.

From building to ornament

I translated the geometry and rhythm of the porch door into the pendant of this necklace. The necklace itself is a snake necklace in yellow gold, which closes firmly but smoothly around the neck and gives a modern, powerful look. The pendant is the centerpiece: sleek and architectural in line, but with refined details that reference the original door design.

The brilliance of ametrine

At the heart of the pendant sparkles a special ametrine. This gemstone is unique because of the natural two-tone effect in which amethyst (purple) and citrine (yellow) come together. Depending on the light, the balance between the shades shifts, giving the jewelry a different look each time. In combination with the gold, a harmonious play of color, texture and brilliance is created.

This makes this necklace not only an ode to Amsterdam's architectural history, but also a wearable work of art with a distinctly timeless character.
