Mokumé Gané cufflinks triangle - Tokyo collection
The triangular Mokumé Gané cufflinks from the Tokyo collection show how craft and refinement come together in a powerful design. The name Mokumé Gané literally means "wood grain texture" and refers to the special markings created when different metals are joined and worked into one.
Design and shaping
The design is shaped like a rounded triangle with gently curved sides. These subtle curves give the cufflinks an elegant, flowing look. The natural lines of the Mokumé pattern follow the shape and almost seem to move with the light. The combination of geometry and organic structure makes this design modern and characterful at the same time.
The cufflinks are constructed from layers of silver and copper. After the forging process, both metals are carefully polished to a high gloss. Initially, the copper has a warm rose gold glow, but contact with oxygen in the air slowly changes the color to a deeper, warm brown accent. Thus, over time, a vibrant, personal patina is created that gives the jewelry even more depth.
Craft and technology
I manufacture these cufflinks entirely by hand in my studio. The wood grain texture is created by carefully folding, forging and finishing the metals. No two pairs are the same; each set has its own pattern and character. The high-gloss finish creates a subtle play of light, bringing the markings in the metal to life.
Inspiration and symbolism
The triangle is a powerful symbol of balance and stability. In this version, the shape refers to harmony among contrasts, exactly what the Mokumé Gané technique embodies. The combination of cool silver and warm copper reflects the Japanese aesthetic of balance and natural beauty.
