Mokumé Gané cufflinks rectangle - Tokyo collection

The Mokumé Gané cufflinks from the Tokyo collection are an ode to Japanese forging and artisanal refinement. Mokumé Gané literally means "wood grain texture" and refers to the natural markings created when different metals are carefully folded together, forged and polished.

Design and engineering

The cufflinks have a sleek rectangular shape that beautifully showcases the distinctive wood grain pattern. The technique is akin to damask, known from traditional knives, but in Mokumé Gané, precious metals are combined instead of steel. In this version, the structure consists of layers of silver and copper, carefully built into a vibrant, organic pattern.

After the forging process, both the silver and copper are highly polished. Initially, the copper has a soft rose gold glow, but during wear it reacts to oxygen in the air. As a result, the metal develops a warm, brown hue that becomes deeper in color over time. This natural process makes each set of cufflinks unique and personal.

Craft and finishing

I manufacture these cufflinks entirely by hand in my studio. Each layer and fold determines the final pattern, so no two pairs are the same. The straight shape gives the cufflinks a modern look, while the vibrant wood grain texture provides warmth and character.

Symbolism and character

The Mokumé Gané technique symbolizes harmony between contrasts. By fusing different metals into one whole, it creates a subtle balance between strength and sophistication. The cufflinks from the Tokyo collection embody that balance: understated, artisanal and with a lasting sense of connection.
