A gold engagement ring with a blue opal. A proposal off the beaten path
When you think of an engagement ring, you probably picture a classic solitaire: a gold ring with a single diamond. It’s a beautiful and timeless design, but fortunately, there are many more options. After all, why does a proposal always have to include a diamond?
For this special commission, I had the privilege of designing a gold engagement ring set with a blue opal. The groom-to-be had a clear vision of the look he was seeking. Working closely together, we developed that vision into a unique, elegant design.
A unique interplay of gold and color
The ring has an open, asymmetrical shape. The two ends of the wide, polished gold band run alongside each other and seem to embrace the oval opal between them. This design creates a playful interplay of lines, while the ring simultaneously retains a powerful yet serene appearance. The opal is set in a smooth setting that follows the stone’s natural shape. Its intense blue, with vibrant turquoise and green hues, forms a stunning contrast with the warm yellow gold.
Precisely because the stone has so much character, I deliberately kept the rest of the design simple. No extra embellishments or small diamonds—just a shape in which the gold and the opal bring out the best in each other.
An engagement ring with its own story
When designing an engagement ring, I think it’s important to look beyond the usual traditions. After all, a ring isn’t special because it fits a certain image, but because it means something to the people involved. That’s what makes a commission like this so enjoyable. The giver contributes ideas to the design, I translate those ideas into a wearable piece of jewelry, and along the way, the ring gradually takes on its own character.
The result is a handmade gold engagement ring that stands out not only because of its unique opal, but above all because of its personalized design. And that’s exactly what I aim to achieve with my custom work: to create a piece of jewelry that couldn’t simply have been picked off a display case, but was crafted specifically for someone. Whether it features a diamond, an opal, or no gemstone at all. Ultimately, it’s the proposal that turns a ring into an engagement ring.
