What is an Opal Doublet?
An opal doublet is a very thin layer of opal glued to a black backing. The backing or base is usually ironstone or - even cheaper - black plastic. Such a stone is a very inexpensive alternative to a real solid opal due to the use of these artifices.
What is an Opal Triplet?
Like an opal doublet, a triplet is made by gluing opal to a black backing. However, if the opal is extremely thin, a transparent layer is sometimes placed on top of the opal. The top layer can be made of quartz or plastic sometimes even plastic.
Solid opals at The Gold Xperience
We don't use doublets or triplets in our studio . While these "fakes" certainly have advantages, such as their low price, I always choose to work with genuine, solid stones. This always results in a more beautiful appearance, deeper colors, and usually a longer lifespan... although an opal is a stone that requires care.
