What is the difference between goldsmith and silversmith?

Many people use the terms goldsmith, silversmith and goldsmith interchangeably, but there is indeed a difference between these crafts. What they have in common? All three revolve around craftsmanship, precision and a love of metal.

The goldsmith

A goldsmith specializes in working with precious metals such as gold and platinum, often in combination with gemstones. Think of rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings —all refined, wearable works of art. The craft requires an eye for detail, because jewelry is small but often has great emotional value. Goldsmiths create new designs, but also repair and restore existing jewelry.

The silversmith

The silversmith traditionally focuses more on silver utensils. Think of cutlery, candlesticks, bowls or tea sets. Whereas the goldsmith usually works in small pieces, the silversmith often works with larger objects. Here too it is all about quality and durability: silverware is not only used, but also cherished and passed on from generation to generation.

Goldsmith: the umbrella term

A goldsmith is actually the collective name for both disciplines. Anyone who calls themselves a goldsmith has the knowledge and skills of both a gold smith and a silversmith. In practice, this means that you can go to a goldsmith for both a goldwedding ring and the restoration of a silver candlestick.

One box, different expressions

The difference, then, lies mainly in the type of object and the materials used, but the foundation is the same: craftsmanship, creativity, and skill. A goldsmith masters both aspects of the craft and can therefore take on a wide range of projects—from a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry to restored silverware.
