Custom-made gold horse head pendant
From a block of wood to a golden horse's head
Some pieces of jewelry start out as nothing more than a rather unimpressive little block of wax…
For this unique pendant, I was commissioned to create a horse’s head in gold. Not as a flat silhouette, but as a fully three-dimensional head, in which the shape and character of the horse really had to come to life.
To do this, I started with hard modeling wax. From the solid block, I first sawed and carved out the rough shape of the horse’s head. At this stage, it still takes quite a bit of imagination to recognize the final piece of jewelry in it. Slowly, the contours become clearer: the nose, jaw, and ears. Then the finer work begins. I remove a little material at a time, take another look, make adjustments, and continue shaping.
That's exactly what I love about this kind of custom work. The piece of jewelry literally comes to life under my hands.
Cast in gold and finished entirely by hand
Once the wax model was finished, the horse's head could be cast in gold. But, of course, the casting doesn't produce a ready-to-wear pendant. The surface must be finished, and all the shapes and details must be rechecked and refined.
Filing, sanding, detailing, and polishing. And then polishing it again. And okay, just to be safe, one more time. Because with a three-dimensional design in particular, the finish ensures that the light flows beautifully across the various shapes. Finally, it was time to work on the eyes. The customer wanted two small black diamonds for this. A subtle detail, but one that instantly adds extra character to the golden horse’s head.
The result is a gold horse-head pendant made entirely by hand: personal, distinctive, and one of a kind. And the best part? Another happy customer. That’s what it’s all about, after all.
