Gold coin wedding rings

Golden Maple Leaf

From gold coins to custom wedding rings

Two young, vibrant people walked into my studio with a lovely request: would I make classic wedding rings for them? Of course, I first congratulated them on their upcoming wedding, after which we sat down together at the consultation table. Over a good cup of coffee, I asked what exactly they had in mind. We talked about style, comfort, and details. I made sketches, showed them examples, let them feel different materials, and finally, we also had an honest discussion about the approximate cost.

A personal start

This couple quickly came up with the idea of crafting their wedding bands entirely from their own gold. Not standard rings from a display case, but wedding bands with a truly personal origin. They brought a beautiful Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin to the studio. A unique starting point for two rings that will last a lifetime and perfectly match their vision of “the perfect wedding.”

Put the saw in

And yes… then comes the moment when the saw cuts through. It’s always a little nerve-wracking. Cutting a perfect, shiny gold coin in half almost feels like a sin. But at the same time, that’s exactly what craftsmanship is all about: transforming existing gold into something new, something personal.
The pieces of gold were then melted down into a glowing liquid mass. During the melting process, I carefully alloy the gold to achieve exactly the right purity: 14-karat gold. This means that I don’t work with ready-made factory materials, but instead assemble the gold entirely by hand in my studio.

From raw gold to perfect proportions

Then the precision work begins. I first test the alloyed gold to ensure that it has reached the correct karat content. Next, I draw and roll the gold, step by step, to the correct thickness and shape. Slowly, the raw material transforms into an elegant gold band that will serve as the foundation for the final wedding rings.

Wedding rings accurate to the tenth of a millimeter

The best part is always shaping the rings themselves. Every dimension, curve, and proportion is tailored entirely to the hands of the future wearers. These rings are finished with precision down to a tenth of a millimeter, ensuring they are not only beautiful but also perfectly comfortable to wear. It is precisely this attention to detail that ultimately creates the perfect wedding ring.

An engraving with character

Finally, I perform a high-gloss polish, giving the gold that warm, deep luster that only true craftsmanship can achieve. Then I carefully engrave the wedding date on the inside of the rings. Not with a standard machine font, but in my own classic handwriting. Entirely hand-engraved with a tiny milling cutter, exactly as the couple wanted. It is precisely these kinds of personal details that make every set of wedding rings unique.

A new life for old gold

What once began as a gold coin steeped in history now shines on as two wedding bands full of promise. Handcrafted, completely personalized, and ready to accompany two people as they embark on the most beautiful chapter of their lives together.
